The Lower Dens album Escape from Evil came out yesterday everywhere but North America, where it came out today. Ondine is the only song I have currently heard from their latest album but I do like the mellow yet upbeat synth. The "extended vocals" is a nice emphasis on the struggle trying to hold onto the already fail relationship the artist is singing about.
Panda Eyes & Teminite - Adventure Time
Adventure Time by Panda Eyes & Teminite is one of those songs I have banded myself from listening to while driving because it would inevitably cause me to speed and get a ticket. But it is a mandatory song for my workout playlist because keeps me going after I hit a wall in my workout. Just because a song isn't amazing itself doesn't mean it can't be amazing in the right moment.
Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime
Sorry for the late post, But hopefully it isn't too late to give you some happy music for the weekend
Walk The Moon - Anna Sun
This poppy Indie rock band is a nice way to get you through the last stretch of the week and dance your way into the weekend.
KFaceTV - Dark Lord Funk (Uptown Funk parody)
For all those Harry Potter fans out there, this awesome parody of Uptown Funk deserves to be the Song of The Day just on fun factor alone. While I put KFaceTV as the artist I recommend on paying attention at the end to hear who was involved in creating this song. Other then that just watch and enjoy.
Grimes - REALiTi
Grimes (Claire Boucher) released this song as a thank you for everywhere she went on her tour in the East. This song was never truly finished and was originally not supposed to be released but I think it not being mastered or being perfect that makes it very enjoyable. I think it might actually be the echo effect she has on her vocals that makes this song. In her other songs he vocals usually turn me off of the track.
Echos & Nightcall - Rainfall
Echos and Nightfall are two nice little artists that I have gotten to know through the SuicideSheep youtube channel and this collaboration it nothing short of amazing. The chilling vocals with the chilling beats and the chilling picture create one wonderful piece of art which I have listened to probably at least a dozen times today.
Modest Mouse - Lampshades On Fire
After eight years Modest Mouse is back and they have brought us a new album called Strangers to Ourselves and I do like that this title fits with the tracks. They feel like a set of tracks you would have found in the Modest Mouse studio after leaving them in there for eight years. You get "comfort" tracks that sound slightly more aggressive then their usual work and you also find some great experimental tracks that I am enjoying the bold effort. Sadly there isn't as many great tracks as I would hope in this experimentation. I like what they are trying to do but sadly and while I think they went in a good direction they missed the mark a lot. Lampshades on Fire is probably my favourite track on the album so give it a listen and if your curious check out the rest of the album.
Levon Vincent - Anti-Corporate Music
I heard someone describe Levon Vincent's music as subterranean experimental dance and I defiantly hear that. I have not listened to his whole self titled album yet but I am going to the second I get a chance.
Twin Shadow - Turn Me Up
I didn't pick this song because it captivated me but I picked it because it felt different. George Lewis Jr. delivers a 80's pop power ballad feel with some modern day touches tucked in and around his songs. This is from his third album Eclipse and while I do like what he is doing, I'm not sure he stands out too much from the crowd. Twin Shadow almost feels a little too much from the 80's and I would like to see something like to go a little harder on mixing 80's dance pop sound with today's dance sound. He can keep the vocals just as they are but i would like to know the number of people who hear him on the radio thinking their station just played some song from the late 80's.
Courtney Barnett - Anonymous Club
Courtney Barnett is probably the best unexpressive sounding singer I have ever heard. Her voice leaves a mystically spiritual sound in her music that is almost hypnotic at times; but I did not have this feeling at first listen. It was only after coming back to her a few months after the release of her double EP A Sea of Split Peas and giving it another listen that she got through to me, and I hope that she gets through to you too.
Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels
I picked Laurie Anderson's Strange Angels because the quality of her vocals are out of this songs league. Though in general Laurie Anderson's song tend to lean on the side of weird so this isn't very surprising. I just wonder what kind of music she would have made if not experimental art pop/rock music.
Screaming Females - Ripe
This Punk Rock band sounds just a little more methodical and reserved on their most recent album Rose Mountain but I am actually enjoying this a lot. They seem to be refining themselves and this album seems to show an evolving Screaming Females since it isn't really a change in their music but more of and advancement. When I new album comes out I always start thinking about where will they go from here, and will Screaming females stick with this more refined feel or will they say screw it, we like to screech our guitars every now and again because that is what we do.
Kubbi - Firelight
Move over Anamanaguchi, there is another 8-bit champion in town. Kubbi is a chiptune artist that has recently released his album Ember that was a pleasure to listen to from end to end. Kubbi does also incorporate Guitar, Drums, and sometimes vocals into his tracks but thankfully they never feel out of place. My one issue is that some of the tracks feel like they don't have a real end to them, and that they just cut off. This can be seen a lot in old video game music that tends to just cycle but Kubbi does leave a track sometimes with a hard cut that can be a little jarring to the listener. If you Enjoy Firelight then I do recommend checking out his other stuff on his Bandcamp website.
Song of The Day
Some semi random song I enjoy will be posted here once a day with a small description of the song and or band.
