Best way to start the new year is to reflect on one past. What better way to do that then to take a listen to DJ Earworm's United State of Pop 2014 (Do What You Wanna Do). DJ Earworm takes some of the popular hits throughout the year and mashes them up into a year end special. While this might not be his best work I think it is always worth a listen. DJ Earworm has made other mashups and not just the year ends ones. He as done a mashup which was used during the London Olympics. Anyways have a listen and see for yourself what songs you remember listening to, and which ones you might have rather forgot.
Leonard Cohen - Slow
Now here is someone I am very happy is still making music. One of the greatest lyricists in my opinion and this makes complete sense considering that Leonard was first a poet and novelist before releasing his first album. This mans voice takes me back in time and keeps me captivated from start to finish with his album Popular Problems released earlier this year. Leonard opens up with by far my favorite song on this album and tells listeners right away that he's still got it!
Todd Terje - Svensk Sas
This Album covers nu-disco, electronic, house but all has that retro jazz feel. This man has merged two amazing genres surprisingly well. Svensk Sas has a nice funky rhythm to it but shouldn't be taken as an example of how the whole album sounds as it is nicely diverse while giving you some kind of electro jazz for the first have and 80's future synth for the second half of the album. This can feel cheesy to some but his use of synth, and electronic beats makes it fun labor of love that can keep you swinging to the beat.
Hozier - Take Me To Church
This song gives me chills. It's just as powerful if not more then the it's music video. I am wondering is we are getting to many of these earthy type bands lately but Hozier seems to prove this wrong. I almost want to call Earthy a genre of music. as long as this "genre" keeps growing we will be the ones who benefit. I don't think all songs on his album Cherry Wines is gold but overall Andrew Hozier-Byrne has created an album that is worth a listen this year.
Alt-J - Every Other Freckle
I enjoy the funky beat these guys bring to the table. Their lyrics feel very folky and you can still hear it in their sound. It's placed nicely just behind the funk but is by no means under powered. Another good tune that is a lot more upbeat is Left Hand Free.
The War on Drugs - An Ocean In Between The Waves
The War on Drugs album Lost in The Dream has been compared to earthy rock artists like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Now while comparing to those two artist are signs of greatness, I don't think The War on Drugs are that amazing...yet. I think these guys have done an amazing job on this album with a number of great songs and will be in my top ten for sure this year. "An Ocean in Between The Waves" is a shinning example of this album and is doesn't feel drawn out at over seven minutes long. If this New-wave Americana band has not been on your radar yet this year I highly recommend at least giving it a listen.
FKA Twigs - Lights On
FKA Twigs has a very nice and soft voice and the beats in her songs stay fresh from start to end. Her music can be very out there with some of the songs and very sexual too. I do enjoy her album and for how quiet and soft he vocals are while not being drowned out by the strong bass. This album has been making it's way to a few peoples top ten lists this year which got me interested and while I can see why the whole album would be on a lot of top ten list I don't see it making mine. "Lights On" is my song of the day because of it being a nice example of how her light voice works well with the dark bass. "Two Weeks" is another good choice but the beat didn't win me over as much as "Lights On". I will also put out a small warning that the videos other then "Two Weeks" were pretty heavy for me and I didn't enjoy the song as much because of it. Again I am not much of a music video person so it could just be me.
Jan Bradley - Christmas Time
Now here is a wonderful tune to start your Holiday morning off with. Beautiful voice with simple rhythm in the background to keep you swinging in your seat as you watch the little ones open their gifts. Happy holidays to all and we'll see you tomorrow with a none holiday based song of the day.
Magnus T. Cook - Snow Bunny
Yes it is Christmas Eve and I was pretty convinced I wasn't going to do any X-mas songs for Song of the Day. That is until one of my podcasts did an amazing episode with 1960's and 70's Christmas pop music. This Podcast is Sound Opinions and if your into podcasts I suggest you give them a listen. Sorry about the bad quality of this song but this seems to be the only video of the song on youtube and a quick google search also come up without any other stream of the song. I think this tune is nice Christmas song without being about Christmas and more about melting a woman's heart.
Weezer - Back To The Shack
Now I know Weezer has been pretty consistent in releasing music but the last album I listened to was the Green Album because I felt like I just didn't like them anymore. Then I hear people talking about their latest album Everything Will Be Alright in the End and that it was actually really good so I took a listen. Now I won't say it is everything I remember from 90's Weezer but it is pretty darn good. Far better then anything from the last decade and a half. Take a listen to their song "Back To The Shack" and see if they are on to something.
Mary J. Blige - Right Now
Mary J. Blige has had some lukewarm music for the last ten to fifteen years but it seems like that ends with her release of The London Sessions album. I have not heard all the songs yet but so far this 12 track album seems to have soulful songs like "Therapy" and some more beaty songs like "Right Now" I am a little biased and have made "Right Now" as song of the day because I need something to keep me going today and this song does help. I do have two little things that seem to bug me the more I listen to this song, and that is the background static at parts that I am guessing was purposefully put in there but I feel like it would probably be better without. The other is that her echo seems to be a little over done. I guess this was done because her music revolves around her vocals but that sweet spot still needs to be found.
Against Me! - True Trans Soul Rebel
Against Me!'s lead singer and guitarist Laura Jane Grace (born Thomas James Gabel) came out as a transgender woman in 2012, and changing her name. Their sixth studio album is appropriately named Transgender Dyphoria Blues. My favourite song off the album is "True Trans Soul Rebel". I don't feel like explaining the song because music is best listened to and this great song is no exception. I don't want to get too preachy but I just want to say I'm happy to be around in a time where people can become who they feel they truly are and not be demeaned because of it. Enjoy the song, and be yourself.
Ex Hex - Don't Wanna Lose
The Reverbs on the guitar in this song are fun and psychedelic. I also believe this has been a year for female vocalists. Most songs I am getting into have a great female lead and I'm loving it. The album cover is a perfect representation of this bands work and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Le Butcherettes - Shame You're All I've Got
Here is a nice punk rock band I discovered while looking at some peoples top albums for the year. I am sure these lists will introduce me to or remind me of some artists for this past year. These lists have influenced me to make the rest of the songs of the day from now till the new year to all be songs that have been released this year.
Years & Years - Real
I have just heard this song and it's catchiness instantly made it the song of the day today. I was going to listen to a few more of their songs before making a final decision but this is song of the day and not band of the day so you are getting "Real" from Years & Years. Simple rhythm along with clapping is the easy bake recipe for a catchy song and they mixed those ingredients just right in this song. I'll have to see if this is a one off or if this band has a few more catchy songs in their library.
Song of The Day
Some semi random song I enjoy will be posted here once a day with a small description of the song and or band.
